Last weekend I went back to the place where I grew up - Peoria, Illinois. On these trips back home one mandatory stop is Avanti's Restaurant which now has three locations in Peoria and another in Normal. Avanti's claim to fame is their Gondola sandwich. It sounds simple enough - ham, salami, American cheese, and lettuce - but it is one of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever had. What makes it so special is the bread. It is baked throughout the day and almost always warm when you get your sandwich. There is a slight sweetness to it but not too sweet. Lisa. my wife, thinks there is a sourdough-like quality to it as well.
While there for the weekend, I ate their sandwiches twice and bought extra bread to bring home. The last bread I ate, in fact, was Avanti's bread, the evening before starting the low-carb phase of this eating program I'm on.
It has 20 years or more since I've had anything from Avanti's other than the Gondola but the rest of their menu is traditional Italian-American fare. I remember the meatballs and pizza bread being exceptional. If you are in Peoria, check out Avanti's: Main & University (309-764-4923), Glen & Sterling (317-688-6565), and 2320 E. Washington St. (309-694-6200). I've uploaded a pdf file of their menu here.

I've been going to Avanti's in Peoria for 25 + years...it is absolutely incredible.
When I go back to visit relatives, I always have to make a stop to bring food back to Indianapolis. Their italian dressing is incredible too...the bread is wonderful dipped in it! I recommend EVERYTHING!
