Nisbet Inn
I've been spending a good deal of time in Southern Indiana the last few months and have been impressed with some of the places I've found. One is the Nisbet Inn is located at 6701 Nisbet Station Road just off of I-64 in Gibson County. It has a Haubstadt address but is not really near the main part of the town. The Inn has an interesting history. It was constructed in 1912 to serve rail travelers as an oasis for food, drink, and lodging. The last train came through in 1971 but the inn has survived. They no longer accommodate overnight guests but still do a great job with the food and drink.
On a recent visit for lunch I took advantage of the special of the day which was a smoked pork chop, German potato salad, and sweet n' sour cole slaw. It was exceptional. The chop, moist and smoky, was served with a thin vinegary sauce. I asked what the sauce was and I was told it was barbecue but it is unlike any barbecue sauce I've had. It was a bit thicker than the Carolina-style vinegar-based sauce I make and the flavor was completely different. It was not very sweet at all and not really spicy. I went great with the pork. Vinegar, of course was highlighted flavor in the potato salad and the slaw. It all worked together very nicely.
Although I did not have dessert, something called, "The Next Best Thing to Robert Redford" had me curious. Not bi-curious, just dessert-curious. I had never heard of this but I Googled it and came up with lots of recipe links including this one.
Anyway, the Nisbet Inn is a bit hard to find but worth the effort. If you plan to check it out your best bet might be to call (812-963-9305). Their hours are Tuesday through Thursday 9 am to 10 pm and Friday and Saturday 9 am to midnight (kitchen closes at 9 pm). You can see their menu here.
