The Victorian Pantry

FoccaciaThis week I found myself in South Bend, Indiana. I had no recommendations for places to eat so I was flying by the seat of my pants. I had a limited time for lunch and what I was seeing out the windshield was discouraging - the same old chains found in any city. Then, I spotted a small shopping center with some upscale shops. This is where I found The Victorian Pantry Bistro and Catering.

The moment I walked in I could see and smell that this was a place was serious about food. Everything behind the glass counters was made from scratch. As I scanned the place looking at the all food-related pictures and posters on the walls, I could not believe it when my eyes settled on a photo of Frugal Gourmet Jeff Smith, the very same photo that hangs in my own kitchen.

For lunch I settled on the Signature Focaccia Sandwich (see photo). It was incredible. The focaccia was light and olive-oil moist with baked in onions, olives, and red bell pepper. Between the bread was thick-cut turkey (thick Black Forrest ham but turkey instead), crisp lettuce, and a sweet raspberry mustard. It was a very satisfying sandwich.

Chef/Owner Steven Stogdill has created something very unique here. If you are every in South Bend stop by the Victorian Pantry. Go here for more information, menus, directions, etc.
